First study shows link between overactive bladder in mothers and children

A study carried out by a member of the SBU's Department of Uropediatrics, Dr. Ubirajara Barroso Jr., together with the head of the Department, Dr. José Murillo Bastos Netto, won the award for best paper presented at the International Children's Continence Society (ICCS) congress, held from June 30 to July 2 in Kyoto (Japan).

Entitled Lower urinary tract symptoms in children are associated with urinary symptoms in their mothers, the study, carried out over five months with 823 pairs (mothers and children) in the cities of Salvador (BA) and Juiz Fora (MG), pointed out the relationship between overactive bladder in mothers and their respective children. The work was coordinated by Dr. Ubirajara Barroso Jr., adjunct professor at the Bahiana School of Medicine and Public Health, and was carried out jointly with Dr. José Murillo Bastos Netto, associate professor at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, and Ariane Sampaio Sousa, a doctoral student at the Bahiana School of Medicine and Public Health.

"It's the first study in the literature to show that mothers who have symptoms of urinary urgency and urinary incontinence are 2.8 times more likely to have children with the same behavior. This problem has always been studied separately, there was no connection. The study found that 12% of mothers and 10% of children had an overactive bladder. This gives us an idea of a national perspective on the prevalence of the problem," explains Dr. Barroso, who is also head of Urology at the Federal University of Bahia.

"Winning an award at a congress where the world's leading researchers on the subject are present is a source of pride. It's a great incentive to keep working. It also opens up new perspectives. We were invited, together with New York Medical College and Dr. Israel Franco, to investigate why this relationship between mothers and children has the same problem," he says.
