In an unprecedented surgery, a young man has his penis reconstructed in Salvador

A young man underwent an unprecedented penile reconstruction surgery at the Professor Edgard Santos University Hospital Complex (Hupes), also known as Hospital das Clinicas, located in the Canela district of Salvador. According to the hospital's press office, the procedure was successful and the patient has already been discharged.

The surgery was carried out on an 18-year-old patient who had his sexual organ torn out by a dog bite when he was eight months old. With the procedure, the patient's penile structure was completely reconstructed, restoring all its functions, including the organ's sexual capacity.

Urologist Ubirajara Barroso, head of the urology department at Hupes and who led the team that performed the surgery, explained the complex procedure. "When the patient was 11, we performed a reconstruction, but only with skin flaps for aesthetic and psychological reasons. At the time, it was the sixth case in the world. Now, seven years later, we've done this unprecedented procedure, which is to reconstruct the penis with the erectile tissue that was embedded in the perineal region. As a result, the patient has a new penis capable of penetration," he said.

Although penile reconstruction surgery has developed over the last few decades, its reconstruction remains a major challenge from an anatomical, functional and aesthetic point of view. "This procedure opens up space for patients with tumors, amputations and congenital problems to undergo penile reconstruction, not only aesthetically but also restoring all the organ's functions," concludes the doctor.
