At what age do children stop wetting the bed?

Night peeing: many children suffer from it. It's a challenge for parents. But is there a right age to stop bedwetting? According to the Brazilian Society of Urology, 15% of children up to the age of five wet the bed at night. By the age of seven, the figure drops to 10%. By the age of ten, it's down to 5%.

The causes can be delayed maturation of the neurological system that controls the bladder, emotional factors and even genetics.

Some signs may indicate that the child is holding in the pee:

  • hold the genital
  • cross your legs
  • stand on tiptoe
  • squatting
  • leaks in panties or underwear

It's very important to drink fluids, not to hold your pee, and to go to the toilet at least every three hours during the day. In the evening, children should avoid liquids after dinner and always pee before bed.

Urinary incontinence

Urologist Flavio Trigo and Mara Etienne, a physiotherapist from the urogynecology group at Hospital das Clínicas, explained the types of incontinence and their treatments on this Wednesday's Bem Estar (9).

Urinary incontinence is the second disease that most affects people's quality of life - second only to depression. It is more common in women and the elderly. Incontinence affects social life, work, sexuality and health. It's not normal to miss a pee, whether you're coughing, laughing or doing physical activity.

There are different types, two of which are the main ones:

  • Urge incontinence - a sudden urge to urinate, where you don't have time to get to the toilet before you leak.
  • Stress incontinence - occurs when the person loses pee when coughing, laughing, sneezing, exercising, going up or down stairs, lifting weights. When the person exerts some other form of pressure on the pelvic floor.
  • Loss of urine due to a mixed cause - which combines both situations.

Causes. They can be varied, but some are more frequent, such as pregnancy and childbirth, obesity, constipation, urinary tract infection, the wrong diet, ageing, surgery and some diseases (cancer, diabetes, enlarged prostate).

Treatments. The indications are different and vary according to the patient. There is physiotherapy, surgery and some medication.
